I starting baking and making candy out of a love for it and the people I love, but no matter who tries my sweets they always thought I should try to sell for others. One day I did and realized that it's not just a love for baking or my love for others, but it's also a love of making people happy, so I started my business and turning back is not an option. Not that I would want it to be.

My boys love the leftovers and I love putting a smile on people's faces. Hearing the "wow" when they try my sweets give me a great deal of satisfaction. I'll never give it up."

Anniversary Vacation! (one night vacation!)

I cant believe my hubby and I have been together for 5 Years now!  I met him at Lula Mae, and that's also where he popped the question!  I love my job as many of you know, but sometimes its important to take a day off!  OK, I don't really think that, but we have not been on a trip by ourselves in 2 years!  My mom and dad gave us the best anniversary gift ever, one night at Lake Arrowhead to just turn off our brains!  Have you ever been?  It was amazing!  My father raised me with boats and lakes and all of that good stuff!  I didn't realize how much I missed it!

My husband and I live in Pasadena, and Lake Arrowhead was only 1 hour and 15 minutes from our house!  Voila! We were in a totally different world! We started off the day by getting checked in to the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa! They just underwent a 20 million dollar renovation, and it was noticeable!  The customer service was amazing!  The people there reminded us of those we met on our honeymoon in Tennessee!  Just good old fashioned people!

We spent the day in town and had an amazing Lunch!  We supported the locals a little, and of course bought our dog Lily some gourmet treats! My absolute favorite part of the trip was our evening watching a free music event in town!  They have free concerts throughout the entire summer!  This was a Billy Joel cover band!  Being raised by a Billy fan, this was the perfect concert for me!  We watched as the man in front of us danced with his golden retriever!  It made me smile so big my cheeks hurt!  The people seemed to all know one another on a first name basis, and just danced the night away!  These concerts are definitely for all ages! I watched ages 2-92 shake their groove thing!

We had an absolute blast! (but of course I did go right back to working on the website the second hubby went to sleep!)

Anywho, if your looking to get away for the night....or take a family vacation, this is the place!  Lake Arrowhead has stolen my heart!  Have fun!

Do It yourself- Paper Flower Pom Poms by Julia

"Create Every Day!"

If you haven't had a chance to check out our new window, you must make it a point to stop in!  It is my favorite!  We have so many amazing options for home decor!  A decor item from Lula Mae goes a long way, and definitely makes a statement!
 
Julia, once again, has created an amazing "Lula" dress!  She told me she was going with a "lost Girl" theme!  She whips up these paper dresses out of nowhere, using Lula Mae gift Wrap, Tissue, and other decorative items!  I think we can all agree that Julia is going places!

I had her craft these adorable Pom Pom's out of tissue paper, with a little help from Martha!  Julia thought it would be fun to share with all of you how it's done!  This is a great addition to any party!  Use bright colors to celebrate a spring birthday!  Use white tissue to showcase an outdoor candle lit evening!  Or, use this natural craft color to bring the outside in!

Step #1. Using 8 sheets of Stock Size Tissue Paper (20" x 30") . Begin by stacking your sheets on top of one another.  Then acordian fold the sheets, from bottow to top!

Step #2. Now, at the center of your acordian, tie a ribbon to secure the pieces together without cinching the tissue. 

Step 3: Cut both left and right edges in a rounded shape!  We dont want any square flower pom pom's!

Step #4. Seperate the layers of tissue, pulling them away from the center one at a time!

Step #5!  Hang with any ribbon your heart desires and ENJOY!  We love crafting with you!  Please email me any ideas or fun pics of crafts you do at home!  Cookies, candles, paper goods, crochet....whatever it is, we would love for you to share!

Gift Wrapping 201

We all know the basics of gift wrap 101.  Simply put it in a box, wrap it with paper from Lula Mae, and tie a bow....Viola! We want to show you how to have a little more fun with your presentation!  At Lula Mae it's all about the presentation!

I have to admit I was not always a gung-ho gift wrapper.  My father believes that all you need is newspaper and duct tape to get the job done.   Julia, a Lula Mae team member, first introduced me to creative gift wrap about 4 years ago when she presented me with a birthday gift that was wrapped so beautifully it looked like the gift itself (Remeber!?  The jeans!)

Julia took the time this week to do some fun ideas with creative gift wrap for three categories!  Men, Children, and classic Birthday!  Have fun with this!  All of the items below may be purchased at Lula Mae, or you can use your own hidden treasures!  Get Creative!

#1. Child's Gift

 

 

Here, Julia used our Glitter Robot Paper, 2 color ways of Chiffon Ribbon by the yard, Smencils, and a cute Birthday Token by Metal Morphisis!  Simply wrap, attach the ribbon and secure a knot, insert Smencils and token, and tie your bow!  You will have the best gift at the party no matter what's inside!

#2. Classic Gift Wrap with a twist!

This is my absolute favorite!  Julia used Snow and Graham wrapping paper,  a FG and Co tag that reads "Queen" (so cute), Tops Malibu sparklers, , and beautiful leaf cut ribbon!  This presentation SCREAMS whimsy!   This is a great way to make your gift that much more by attaching three smaller items to the outside!  Its like 4 gifts in one! 

#3. Men's Gift

As you all know, we believe in Humor for men!  We back them up when it comes to not receiving a new sweater for their birthday, but rather something to make them laugh!  Julia used humor in this presentation!  Snow and Graham wrapping paper, black satin ribbon, and a "lady killer" bottle stopper!

One of my favorite customers stopped in to Lula yesterday in search for a birthday gift for a co-worker!  She bought a beautiful 3 wick tin candle and some goodies for herself with our Monday Coupon!  We were talking about this and that and she mentioned that one of the main reasons Lula Mae is her first choice is because we recognize that everyone can use a break right now, and our weekly promotions are a blessing to her(and our new and improved HUGE sale section) !

Flutter is my absolute favorite go to for wardrobe in Old Pasadena!  It has become a joke there when my Mom comes in with me because they know she has just landed and Flutter was our second stop (she always wants to see the new stuff at Lula)  .  The customer service is what first hooked me in!  You can go in to flutter in Denim, tattoos and cotton and be treated as if you were a queen!  After frequenting the shop we joined the mailing list and the promotions are an absolute TREAT!

The Joy Of Soy!

This weeks craft is candle making 101.  I will teach you the basics...then unleash your creative side and create your very own!  

I was initially going to use vintage tea cups for this project.  My husband and I went in search for some at the Rose Bowl Flea Market last weekend and as we were wondering around in antique heaven, I found the most amazing milk glass jars used for creme.  The creme was of course long gone.  These bottles look to be from the 30's or 40's.  They were available in every shape and size you could imagine, no two alike!  I purchased 6 and we were on our way!  No tea-cups needed, these little cuties were even more Lula-rific!

The idea of candle making made me a little nervous because it sounds so complicated!  Its not!  It took me about 30 minutes in total, not including the hardening process! 

You can choose anything you like (no plastic!) for the container!  A vase, tea cup, coffee cup, mason jar...the ideas are endless!  Just make sure that the mouth is as wide as the base so you can lite your homemade treasure! 

These little cuties are available at Lula Mae for $8.00, or you can make your own by using the following instructions!  Have fun guys! 

What you will need!
Soy Wax
Wax coated Wicks(coat them yourself if you prefer!) with metal base
Containers
Colorant (optional) I used a natural soft blush
Fragrance (optional) I used magnolia oil
Wooden Spoon
Pencils or kabob sticks
Glue Dots
Measuring cup - glass

Instructions

Line up your adorable clean containers on a flat work surface
place a glue dot at the inside bottom center of your container
press metal base of wick to glue dot to secure wick
roll access wick around pencil and rest pencil flat on top of container, with wick centered (this assures that your wick will stay in place while pouring and drying)

Melt appropriate amount of soy wax in double boiler until wax becomes liquefied and translucent
pour wax from boiler to measuring cup.  This is where you would add color and or fragrance
pour wax into containers leaving 3/8" distance from the top of your container
make sure your wick remains centered!

just 25 more easy steps!  JUST JOKING!  Your done!  watch those cuties dry (about an hour, and you don't have to watch), snip your wick (about 3/4" above wax)  and light!

Value on the dollar = Customer Service

I am sure many of you have heard the widely used term "value on the dollar" lately.   Times are tough and if we spend we want it to count.  Whether that be shopping local or clipping coupons, the most important component of "value on the dollar" is customer service.  At Lula Mae we have always prided ourselves in how much we appreciate our customers!  We have always aimed to bring you back to the days(which you may or may not remember) when you walked into a business as a customer and were greeted as a friend.  We always say hello, never talk on the phone with customers in the shop, and truly appreciate the fact that you took the time to choose Lula Mae!

Because of this high standard we have at Lula, I have become quite particular about how I am treated as a customer/consumer.  I have been known to walk out of places, complain to quite a few managers, and yes...write complaints.  I also make sure to give credit where credit is due!  I will ask for a supervisor to compliment staff, again write letters, or sit on the phone with AT&T on hold for 45 minutes to compliment an employee.  This brings me to my subject for the evening (whew)  Crowned Studio.

 

Crowned Studio.....a boutique salon, has not only mastered the do, they have mastered customer service.  In fact, I'm pretty sure they wrote the book.  I have already informed quite a few of you about them, but I feel I really need to spread the word!

Andrea, the owner, is my super hero!  Every time I go in she takes the time to ask me if I am pleased, or would like to make any changes!  Then (since of course as you all know, I am always making changes) she takes the time to explain to me how those changes would work with my hair, and how she is going to approach it!  I have been going to Andrea for over a year now, and I still receive the same customer care. 

My mom came in to town to visit and made an appointment to see the wizard of hair, as I describe her.  She sat my mom down and explained that the best thing she  could do for my mom would be to talk about her hair, and write notes for her to bring back to her stylist in Seattle!  SHE DID JUST THAT!  I know, I know, your thinking "yeah right!"  It's absolutely true.  This amazing woman wrote notes for my mom and spent over an hour talking to her about what the best look would be for her and how to go about it.  Andrea's philosophy was that if she did my moms hair then, it could not be re-created.  Not because of skill set, but because they were two different stylists in two different cities.  If your not catching on to this miracle, I'll explain it.  Most...no I'm sorry, everyone and anyone else (with the exception of the Crowned Studio Staff) would have sat her down and colored it.  This was a completely selfless act and only benefited the customer!  This ladies and gentlemen is "value on the dollar".

Andrea is the color director, and Chris is the Cutting Specialist!  I LOVE CHRIS!  He, just as Andrea, always asks me what I have in mind and actually listens.  I hear from so many of you the same complaint about not being heard when sitting in "the chair"  If you want a Mohawk, Chris is going to give you the most amazing Mohawk in town.  If you want to look like Barbie, he's going to make you even hotter.  He listens and creates and recommends!  I just adore him!

It's not just my two superhero's, it's the entire staff!  They remember you name, ask you how your doing, and make you feel like you are part of the family!

So, this week on "shop local" this is the only business I will cover!  All I ask is that after you leave from your first appointment at Crowned Studio, you rush over to Lula and show off your fabulous do!

What does your house look like?

Many of you ask me what my home looks like!  I always respond "like Alice in Wonderland lives there!"  And yes......it's all from Lula Mae with the exception of our furniture, my husband, all of our cats, and of course Lily our dog!  The rest is from Lula.  If we break it, it is adopted by me!  I thought it would be fun to finally show you some pics!  Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoy all of Lula's tchotchkes as much as I do!

Yes, that's right!  Blue Q's Instant infant!  Our cardboard child  is now 4 years old and has not aged a bit!  Nor do we loose any sleep or have to worry about a college fund!  All he requires is a change of scenery now and then!  I am embarrassed to say we have not agreed on a name!  Any recommendations?

My dear friends/customers Jana and David were shocked to find that we took our Christmas tree down each year at home, but keep them up at Lula year round.  Jana explained that they leave there huge black tree up for every season and decorate it accordingly!  "HOW INSPIRING" I thought!  I give you our year round tree!  The ornaments are mostly from Lula Mae, with the exception of some vintage angels from Grandma!  Why not put the tree back up and just say no to days without celebration?

tchotchkes!!!!!  From Bethany Lowe dolls to Snoop Dog!  This bookshelf brings a smile to my face every time I pass by!  It's not clutter, it's whimsy!  The trick is to not spread them all over the house, but categorize them!  Small objects, large, Halloween, etc!

As many of you know, Colonel Cupcake took a bad fall last year at Lula.  He no longer has a back, but he does have a happy home!  I figured why not leave him out year round!  Cupcakes are always welcome in our home even in the form of a giant nutcracker!

Im sure you recognize the prints, but have you met Latte Lucy?  Created by Deborah Scotch!  We have her for sale at Lula and I could not resist!  I don't know how I would function without my coffee, Latte Lucy looks as though she feels the same way!  I love that she has wings and is ready for the day!  The canister set is also from Lula Mae!

Oh, Jennifer Conniff, why do you tempt me so!  I adore these handmade creations!  This is my collection so far.  Although we did just receive a new shipment, so the wall may still continue to grow!  They are in our kitchen on the way to the back door.  I think they are so encouraging and a wonderful reminder of all things good when stepping out into the world!

Ephemera magnets continue to be our best seller!  I am one of the purchasers!  I would love nothing more then to sit down to lunch with these Seattle based masterminds!  If you are ever in need of a good laugh, stop in during lunch and read the magnets on our wall!  I swear your day will turn bright in an instant!  WARNING: If you take life too seriously this may not make for an enjoyable lunch break!

Ladies, Ladies Ladies!!!  To the left I give you complete organization and the key to saving $ at your grocery store.  To the right I give you no more arguments with your significant other on the subject of To Do's.  This checklist saves marriages!  It also puts the role of nag right onto the paper pads shoulders!  Life savers I tell you!

My husband and I used to burn through a candle from Lula in 3 days!  That is until a little kitten by the name of Minnie Mae came in to our lives. (Minne Mae was named after Lula Mae's sister)
Minnie Mae with the same taste in candles as yours truly, and no fear in her heart, simply approached my Voluspa candle and smelled it......while it was lit! It was not a pretty picture when her little whiskers said bye bye!  The whiskers have since grown back, but Minnie and I decided on a no burning policy in the house!  I am still obsessed with candles so I have them on display in our home!  Hilarious!

We refer to this room fondly as "mom's room" because I am lucky enough to have my mom visit at least every three months, and we rarely have other guests!
I purchased these Tattoo Dolls for my husband when we moved into our new home!  I am happy to say that we now carry them at Lula!  They are designed by local artist Spitfire Girl!  They are great as a decorative pillow or in a cute basket as seen here!  They also look like my husband and I as most of you know!  They are sharing a basket with two of my favorite BlaBla dolls!

Halloween is one of our favorite Holidays at the Christensen house!  This is a Halloween shrine containing Bethany Lowe items from the last 6 years!  They are all damaged, or as my hubby and I like to say "have personality"!

Something Fun! - Bath Tea's

Oh my goodness I have such a fun do it yourself project for all of my crafters out there!  For those of you who are not craft inclined you can find these sweet little bath tea's at Lula Mae!  Available in Chamomile, Lavender or Verbena, for only $5.00 each!

Instructions:

Supplies:

Starched Muslin Bags or Squares
Free Trade/Organic Chamomile, Lavender, and or Verbena
Quilters Fabric, 100% Cotton
1/8" Silk Ribbon or Cotton
Handmade scent labels

Instructions:

Cut your quilting fabric at double the height of your muslin bag, and the exact width
*Hint: Use "zig zag" sheers to avoid fraying

Wrap Quilting fabric from top of bag, under bag, and back aroung to the top, just like a taco!

Take your ribbon (1/8"), press firmly at top right corner with small scissors to push the ribbon through all layers of fabric and muslin.  Once the ribbon has gone through, repeat through the left back of the bag and push through to the front. 

Fill your bag with 4 heaping tablespoons of your herb.

Pull muslin string closure tight and tie in a double knot. 

Punch holes at the top of your handmade scent labels and insert ribbon through hole.

Tie a pretty little bow with your ribbon at the front of the bag and Viola!  Bath Teas for you or someone you love!

To Use:

Draw a bath and remove quilters fabric and label by simply untying your pretty little bow and removing from muslin.

Drop muslin bag in the tub with Muslin string still tied taunt..... then RELAX!

Mom and Me!

Happy Mothers Day To All!  I just had the greatest weekend ever with my Mom!  Every year she comes in to town for the Pasadena Showcase house .   I have to say this was my most favorite showcase yet!  The house was amazing, and the guest house was even more so!  If you've never been I highly recommend it!  This would be the perfect last minute Mother's day adventure!

We also had some amazing Culinary Experiences!  I have had Elements Kitchen for Catering, but never had the opportunity to dine with them!  All I have to say is Pear, Brie, Walnut and Pesto sandwich on Raisin bread!  OH MY GOSH!  They are absolute genius!  We sat outside under a beautiful Umbrella and watched as Pasadena strolled by!  Please check it out, you will not regret it! http://www.elementskitchen.com  

We then attended Unique LA!  An amazing showcase of independent artists and designers!  From T-shirts to soap we experienced it all and found some great new designers for Lula Mae!  Check back soon to hear all about them!

Ok, back to Culinary experiences..... Tre Venezie where have you been all my Life!  Tucked away on Green Street, this restaurant feels like your best friends Living Room!  Your best friends designer living room!  It was the most Gourmet experience I have ever had, the most beautiful ambiance I have ever experienced and the prices were so competitive.  We went on a Saturday evening for Mom's Bday!  I am going to tell you what I had, you will have to read it twice because you wont believe me...it's true "Homemade ravioli( made in house daily) filled with Spinach and Dark Chocolate!"  Go ahead, I'll give you a second to read that again! 

I have an addiction when it comes to great cuisine!  This is by far the best dinner experience I've had in the 10 years I've been in Pasadena!  I might as well just give up on everything but Elements and Tre Venezie!  Call them for your next special evening!  Then call me after and tell me how much you love me for sending you there!  Oh, and thanks Julia for telling us to check it out!
